The Life of Bassman
For over 10 years Bassman Spinnerbaits have been one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of custom made spinnerbaits for the tournament angler, diehard fisherman and for those who just want to catch a fish. All their gear is made from top quality components and silicone skirt material. Being one of the first spinnerbait manufactures in Australia, Bassman have come a long way from the early days of the humble spinnerbait. Any native angler would have used many of these and have most likely come across a Bassman or two in their day and would most likely have one or two in their tackle box.
Bassman was founded on the customised spinnerbait. In the early days Ron Sattler set up Bassman from the Bass Lodge located in the upper MacLeay River in northern NSW. Ron started making spinnerbaits for himself and realised what potential they had to catch our natives. From there Glen and Sue Casey took over the reins and built their Bassman facility at their home in Lismore N.S.W.
For those of you who know Glen and Sue, you would know how hard these two work to produce what can only be described as an awesome and very effective product that is lethal on our Native Australian fresh water species. They have developed their lures over the past decade to specifically target Australian Bass, Murray Cod, Yellow Belly and Sooty Grunter. In the past three years they have even developed lures to target the American Bass species to great effect with the help of sponsored angler Carl Jocumsen.
In the early days Glen and Sue would regularly travel around to fishing tournaments and custom make spinner baits on the spot for any angler’s requirements. One particular occasion they made a spinnerbait for Carl Jocumsen the night before his maiden win at an ABT comp at Somerset Dam. They did the same for Colin Singleton that same event and he came second in that tournament. They were the driving force behind Carl’s dominance on the AFC series after helping develop the Carls Compact in the blue gill pattern that dominated the season.
Not only have Glen and Sue at Bassman followed the tournament scene around, they are very supportive sponsors of many of our Australian Native tournament series. They’ve sponsored ABT since their inception, they are proud sponsors of BASS Nation Australia, the Australian Yellow belly championships and the Yamaha Cod Classic.
Bassman spinnerbaits come in a number of series, Carl compact which is a very effective bass lure. The Codman series which speaks for itself, the DT series which is a bigger twin arm set up for luring our larger natives, the TW series which is a slimmer, streamlined spinnerbait with a hidden weigh system, and the yellaman series which has a range of brighter colours and has an added swimbait tail. Bassman not only make spinnerbaits but also manufacture a number of other effective fish catchers. The bassman mumbler is a chatter bait or swim bait. They also have a great surface range of buzzbaits. Bassman provide a number of weights in their range from 1/8 oz right through to the heavy weighted 2 1/2 oz for deep trolling for Murray cod, XL yellowbelly and any other large predator.
If you’re an avid user of soft plastics, Glen and Sue have a great range of jig heads available in assorted colours. Match this with one of their customised beetle spins and you’re in with a real shot at some quality fish.
Over the years Glen and Sue at Bassman have aided some of Australia’s best freshwater anglers like, Carl Jocumsen, Dave Hodge, Rod Mackenzie, John Schofield, Barry Oxford, Colin Singleton, Dan Clancy, Matty ‘Cap’ Anderson, Rodger Miles, Ashley Sims, Peter Phelps and Trevor Foote. All of these anglers have helped or had input into developing spinnerbaits to catch Murray Cod, Bass and Yellow belly.
Keep an eye out for some new additions to the Bassman range of colours with some exciting prototypes proving very successful in our local rivers and dams. If you’d like a custom made spinnerbait from Bassman you can order through your local tackle shop.
